Judy Coats Smith peacefully passed away at her home on March 24, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born in Johnston County to George and Olive Coats. Judy spent many years as a hospice nurse in Winston-Salem and Wilmington. Judy dedicated her career to caring for others and retired from Cape Fear Hospice. Her compassionate nature and commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on those she cared for.

Judy was a cherished member of Friedberg Moravian Church, where her faith and community were central to her life. She found solace and strength in her spiritual beliefs, and her presence will be deeply missed by her church family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Olive Coats.

Judy is survived by her loving husband, Robert Clinton Smith, III, of the home; her son, Bradley Smith (Christina) of Clemmons; her daughter, Melody Sheppard of Greenville; her brother, George Walton Coats of Lexington; and four adoring grandchildren, Kennedy, Thomas, Molly, and Joey.
