Kitty Anderson

July 11, 1933 — February 10, 2022

Kathleen Hundley Philpott Anderson “Kitty” passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022. She was 88 years old.   She was the eldest daughter of the late Lt. Governor H. Cloyd Philpott, Sr. and Frances Thompson Philpott.  She was born in Lexington, NC and with the exception of her time at Holton Arms School in Washington DC, UNC Chapel Hill and a few years as an Army wife, spent her life there surrounded by a large loving extended family.  She married the love of her life, Harry Anderson, Jr. of Asheboro in 1956 and they raised three daughters together in Lexington until Harry passed away in 1978.

Kitty held several titles throughout her life -Mom, Nana, Minner, the Champeen Fudge Maker, the one with the beautiful blue eyes, professional volunteer, best villain in the Charity League play and was known for her grace and strength. She was deeply devoted to her family, friends, her hometown and all things Tar Heel.  She loved being a North Carolinian and often quoted the state toast ‘Here’s to the land of the long leaf pine…” when raising a glass with friends. She enjoyed hosting family and friends for many special occasions and casual get together with wonderful food, drinks and her special way of making everyone, old friends and new acquaintances alike, feel welcome and comfortable.   Kitty was also known for her big hearted generosity and compassion. This was evidenced by the many strays (two and four legged ones) who took up residence on a permanent or temporary basis at her home throughout her life.

Many of those she loved, laughed with, and lived for preceded her in death including her brother H. Cloyd Philpott, Jr., her sons in law, Tom Danze and Mike Laughon and her sister-in-law Gloria Anderson Cranford. Heirs of her special strength and grace are her daughters, Kathleen Anderson Danze, Tance Anderson Laughon, Beth Anderson Bailey (Tim); her grandsons, Robert Danze (Maria), Harrison Danze (Jennifer) Holmes Laughon, Noah Bailey and Aaron Bailey; her sister Jo Philpott Leonard (Ron), sister-in-law, Katherine Barrett Philpott and her ‘sons’ Gordon, George and Clay Grubb.  She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Piedmont Crossing, particularly Kitty’s 200 Hall family for the wonderful care, compassion, and comfort they provided her these last several years.  We will always be grateful.

A celebration of Kitty’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, NC on Wednesday, February 16 th at 11:00 am.  Visitation will be held at Davidson Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 15 th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00pm.

Although Kitty loved flowers she loved people more, so please consider a donation to two places she held near and dear to her big, big heart- Meals-on-Wheels and Davidson Medical Ministries.  Give the flowers you would have sent in her memory to someone you love or someone in need of a little boost.  Kitty’s philosophy was “give your flowers to the living and let them know you care while you have the chance!”
