Lakema Hughes Byerly

Lakema Hughes Byerly, age 81, of Lexington, North Carolina passed away on October 18, 2025, at Hinkle House Hospice. She was born on September 13th, 1944, to Lindsey Lee Hughes and Lucille Varner Hughes. Lakema was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and member of her community.

A service to celebrate Lakema’s life will be held at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel at 2 pm Wednesday October 22nd. 2025, ministered by Pastor Zach Hall. Following the service Lakema will be laid to rest at Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends from 1:00 PM till 2:00 PM, prior to the service.

Lakema was preceded in death by her parents, brother Stoney Hughes (Janice), and sister Clara Mae Beck (Dale), sister in-law Betty Jean Hughes.

She is survived by her beloved husband Fredrick Lynn Byerly, Jr. whom they shared 61 beautiful years together. Her Daughter Patricia Jones (Jeff), 4 grandchildren Aaron (Savannah), Cassidy, Philip, Logan (Kourtney) and siblings Silver Hughes, Jill Mann (Ronnie), and Gail Ligon (Buddy).

In her early years, Lakema worked as a beautician, where her gentle spirit and warm smile made her a favorite among clients. She later worked in the city school cafeterias, and Lexington Furniture, and eventually retired from Lexington Home Brands. No matter where she worked, Lakema was known for her kindness, easygoing nature, and quiet strength. She never had a harsh word to say and was full of love for everyone around her.

Of Christian faith, she was a lifelong member of the Evangelical and Reformed tradition, first attending 2nd Reformed Church and later becoming a devoted member of Memorial Evangelical and Reformed Church. Her faith was a guiding light in her life and shone through in her daily actions.

Lakema also found joy in life’s simple beauty. She loved butterflies, hummingbirds, and tending to her beautiful flowers.
