The Honorable Larry Gilmer Beck, former City Councilman, 72, of Cedar Lane, died Thursday, March 6 at the Hinkle Hospice House after a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Monday, March 10 at the First Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Tommy Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Mr. Beck was born January 10, 1942 in Davidson County to Clois Gilmer Beck and Della Mae Davis Beck. He was a graduate of Wingate College and retired from Lexington Home Brands as Human Resources Director. He was elected to Lexington City Council in 1985 to a two year term and was later re-elected for five consecutive four year terms. He was also elected Mayor Pro-Tem in 2001 and serving until 2012. He was the City of Lexington’ s representative to Piedmont Triad Council of Government since 1996 and currently served as Vice Chairman of the Executive Board. Mr. Beck represented Davidson County on the PTCOG Rural Transportation Board, serving as Vice Chairman. He was also a member of Lexington Civitan Club and served on the Board of Directors of The Workshop of Davidson County and the Edward C. Smith Civic Center.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue Perrell Beck of the home; his daughters, Elizabeth Beck Cross and husband, Frank, of Lexington and Julie Christie Beck of Winston Salem; his brothers, Johnny Beck and wife, Sydney, and Tommy Beck and wife, Kay, both of Lexington; and his grandchildren, Mikayla Simone Cross and Austin Davis Cross.
