Larry Eugene “Gene” Black, 91, of Davidson County, passed away Friday, August 2, 2024, at Hinkle Hospice House.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at Pilgrim Reformed Church, with Rev. Richard Moore officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday, August 5, 2024, at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.
Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.
Gene was born on June 27, 1933, in Davidson County, to the late John Raymond Black and Irene Essick Black. After graduating from Welcome High School, he went on to proudly serve his country in the Army and later the National Guard. After the service he worked for many years and retired from McLean Trucking and went on to work for Kepley Frank Hardwood and was a member of Pilgrim Reformed Church.
Gene was a respected member of the American Legion Post 0162 in Reeds for 45 years and held a membership for 27 years at Triangle VFD, having been a volunteer fireman for most of his life. His work with Meals on Wheels also illustrated his servant’s heart and he delivered food to the elderly while up into his 80’s.
He enjoyed singing, especially in the choir at church, loved gardening, doing yard work, and when he could, going fishing.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Jean Black and brother Reid Black.
Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Ray Black (Laurie), of Lexington, and Mike Black (Menna), of Lexington; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
