Lawrence Julian Russell Sr., 97, of Thomasville, passed away February 2, 2022, at his home in Thomasville.
A celebration of his life will be held 2 pm Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Fair Grove United Methodist Church.
Mr. Russell was born March 10, 1924, in Davidson County, to Henry Lee Russell and Vada Mae Sowers Russell. Lawrence was a devoted member of Fair Grove Methodist Church, and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a
Veteran of the US Army, serving in the signal core, from Omaha Beach, France, through Europe, into Germany and back, during WWII.
He was retired from the US Postal Service, having been a mail carrier and a clerk for 27 years. He loved people, the outdoors, especially golfing, camping and, fishing, and lived life to the fullest. Lawrence loved working with his hands, fixing and repairing items, from broken figurines and toys to electrical appliances and lawnmower motors. He loved building things, from ornate baskets to garages and Tree Houses, for the people he knew and loved, especially his family. He was a Boy Scouts of America Scout Master, for the Salvation Army Troup for the underprivileged youth in Thomasville, and helped, along with his wife, Dot, with youth groups and choirs at church.
His passion was his faith, church, family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandson. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who will be missed by all.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Everette Russell, H.L. Russell Jr, sisters, Lillian Baker and Lois Bryant.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 74 years Doris Marie Rudisill Russell, of the home, son, Lawrence Julian Russell Jr. of Jupiter Fla., daughter, Sharon Leigh Russell Keever and husband David of Lexington; three grandchildren, Jennifer Marie, Jonathan Matthew and his significant other Ashley
Watkins, Jason Michael and his wife Bethany. Also surviving is one great grandson, Landon Watkins, and sister-in-law, Polly Russell of Thomasville.
