Mrs. Leonard was born December 28, 1926 in Duplin County to A. Randell Hargrove and Luvenia Kornegay Hargrove. She grew up in rural Duplin County and had many stories about family life there. She often talked about working the tobacco fields and having barns filled with tobacco before sunrise. She was a homemaker first but had a number of other jobs. She met and married her husband, Roby while working for the railroad in Wilmington, NC in 1945. Later she would attend beauty school and operated Lib’s Beauty Shop at her home near Tyro. She worked in the office of Red Bird Cab in Lexington before finishing her career working for Fab Masters.
She showed us a strong sense of love of family. She kept close ties to the people around Mount Olive, NC throughout her life. She loved to visit there for family reunions. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her eyes and she talked of them often. She loved to cook and feed family and friends, and playing cards with her friends in the neighborhood. Rook was her favorite but it really did not matter as long as it was cards. She loved to square dance and its’ fellowship until her health forced her to stop.
Thank you Mom for all that you taught us; your strong sense of right and wrong, of self-reliance, of self-worth, and even a little bit of stubbornness. Thank you for the love of family and friends, the recipes, and for being who you were and what you wanted us to be. We will miss your lessons and will miss your wonderful smile and laughter. We know you are at a wondrous reunion now and we look forward to seeing you again when the Lord calls us to Him. Preceding her in death was her husband, Roby C. Leonard, whom she married on July 5, 1946 and a beloved sister, Norma Shirley Waters.
Surviving are two sons Randal Luther Leonard and wife Janet of Winston-Salem, Jeffery Dean Leonard and wife, Dana of Wallburg; granddaughters, Rachel Elizabeth Leonard of Raleigh, Madelyn Rae Leonard of Charlotte and Haylee Claire Leonard of Wallburg.
