Lillie was born on December 20, 1934, in Davidson County, to the late Harvey Gray Smith and Mildred Trotter Smith.
Lillie was a godly woman whose faith shaped every aspect of her life. A devoted Christian, she not only taught Sunday school and served as a youth director, but lived in such a way that the light of Christ was unmistakably visible to all who knew her. She found deep joy in her family, proudly embracing her role as a mother to many and cherishing every connection with loved ones. Social by nature, Lillie found ways to remain engaged even in her later years, turning to Facebook as a tool to stay in touch and uplift others with her words. Her heart for service was evident in her work with Meals on Wheels and her frequent presence in the soup kitchen, always offering help where it was needed most. An attendant of John Wesley College, she sang in a quartet there, her voice echoing the joy she found in music and ministry. Lillie dedicated much of her life to nursing, compassionately caring for others in home health, long-term care, and as a school nurse—ultimately inspiring her daughter to follow in her footsteps. She was not only nurturing but also a visionary, unafraid to take action when change was needed, always striving to better her community. Lillie’s life was a radiant testimony of love, faith, and purpose—a legacy that continues to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lockwood, a son, Dr. James Lockwood, and sister, Doris Page.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert Lockwood Jr. (Eve), of Lexington, Debra Cornelison (Dwight), of Lexington, Christopher Lockwood (Lisa), of Lexington, Timothy Lockwood (Jody), of Lexington, John Lockwood (Sandy), of Winston Salem, Martha Frye (James), of Brown Summit, Mary Ramsey (John), of Kannapolis, and Steven Lockwood (Tobi), of Lexington; daughter in law, Maggie Brydges; grandchildren, Stacy Foster(Amber), Matthew Everhart, Melissa Lockwood, Jennifer Gempp (Lucas) , Robin Young (Kyle), Kathleen Magarira(Munashe), Holly Turnage (Troy), Erin Everhart Sholtz (Roger), Logan Lockwood, Hannah Moss (Jeffrey), James Frye, and Vincent Cornelison; fifteen great grandchildren; special nephew, Robert Bame (Rhonda); numerous other nieces and nephews, close extended family, a wonderful group of neighbors, and many close friends.
