Edna Lois Zimmerman Collins, 100, passed away January 21, 2021, at Bermuda Village Long Term Care Unit. She was born December 27, 1920, in Winston-Salem to the late Fred F. Zimmerman and Mary E. Clodfelter Zimmerman.
Lois graduated from South (James A. Gray) High School in 1937, and married Walter A. Collins Jr. on June 2, 1940. She joined the old New Eden Moravian Church at an early age and was a faithful member of the church until her health failed. She sang in the choir, served on the board and taught Sunday School. Lois joined her husband at Collins Trucking Co. in 1952 until they both retired in 1992, serving all of the large companies in this area. She enjoyed cooking and feeding anyone who came to her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter A. Collins Jr., who died in 2003, two brothers, Aldine F. Zimmerman in 1924 and Everette F. "Bud" Zimmerman in 1988, and four sisters, Lucille Z. Dowell in 1986, Earlene Z. Spears in 1999, Ruby Z. Spivey in 2016 and Kate Z. Funk in 2020. Surviving are her two sons, Anthony E. Collins Sr. and wife Nicolynn of Washington, WV, and Walter A. Collins III and wife Jeanne of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Anthony E. Collins Jr. and wife Dina of Lexington, Jon L. Collins and wife Kim of Durham, Walter Carl Collins of Greensboro, Jennifer C. Maton and husband Ben of Charlottesville, VA, and James C. Collins and wife Stacie of Stoughton WI.; eight great-grandchildren: Meghan C. Shelton (Preston), Caroline C. Clark (Zachary), Faith C. Lambert (Adam), Elyssa Collins, Joshua Collins (Brianna), Stella Maton, Ruby Maton and Phoenix Maton; and three great-great grandchildren: Adilana Lambert, Oren Shelton and Rhynnly Lambert; and one loving younger sister, Violet Z. Everhart, who was a great help during her last years. The family also wishes to thank Mary Stone and her staff at Heritage Woods, who cared for her from August 2, 2019 until she suffered a fall and broken hip on December 9, 2020, and to the staff at Bermuda Village and Trellis Supportive Care.
Because of the COVID-19 virus, there will be no services at this time; she will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel-New Eden Moravian Church, 3680 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107. Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
