Lowell Craig Varner, age 54 or Arbor Drive, Lexington passed away Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2014) morning at Hinkle Hospice House, after a long, courageous battle with brain cancer.
A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday (March 2, 2014) at Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church with Rev. Chris Bitterman, Rev. Francis Smith and Rev. Kirk Blankenship officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 until 4:00 pm prior to the service.
Craig was born in Davidson County, September 10, 1959 to Lowell Gene (Ike) and Peggy Briggs Varner. Craig was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and son. His gift was always serving others in his community and did so with a loving heart. He was a former employee of Lexington Home Brands; a graduate of Central Davidson High School Class of 1977 and received his BA in 1981from Appalachian State University. He was a member of Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian where he was a member of the choir, greeter, Disaster relief team, worked with vacation bible school, avid prayer walker and helped coordinate the bread ministry. He had served as a house parent at American Children’s Home, volunteered as a Counselor with Contact of Davidson County, Crisis Ministry and Pastor’s Pantry. He earned his Eagle Scout with Troop 215 of Becks Lutheran Church.
Craig is survived by his wife, Patti Jones Varner of the home; daughters, Jessica Jackson (Kevin) of Lexington, Rachael Owen of the home; grandchildren, Rance and Rylan Jackson; his mother, Peggy Briggs Varner of Lexington; brother, David Gene Varner (Tracy) of Lexington; nephew, Joseph Varner; nieces, Katie and Olivia Varner and several cousins.
