Loy Hunter Fennell Jr., 80, of Tower Drive, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Missionary Alliance Church by the Revs. Michael Gates and Albert Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Fennell was born June 7, 1927, in New Castle, Pa., to Loy H. Fennell and Mary McKince. He was a faithful Christian, read his bible daily and loved his church. He was a deacon from the mid-80s to early 90s at his church. He was also an active member in the Adult Sunday School Class. He enjoyed playing golf on Mondays and Thursdays, he also enjoyed gardening and reading. He faithfully read the newspaper from front to back each day, technical manuals, owners manuals and Consumer Reports. Mr. Fennell graduated from new Castle High School, New Castle, Pa. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on January 22, 1946 and served his tour until he was honorable discharged as a Sergeant on July 24, 1947. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon. After his discharge, he used his VA education benefits and earned his college degree. He worked at Lucent and retired after 42 years of service and still has numerous friends from his career there. Mr. Fennell regularly visited Lonnie at the nursing home with his miniature schnauzer, Dusty. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Fennell and sister, Mercedia.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 62 wonderful years, Marie F. Jones, whom he married March 8, 1947; three children, Linda Y. Ratliff of Welcome, Diana and David Boles of Winston-Salem, and Loy Hunter Fennell III of Waconia, Mn; Loy’s pride and joy are his grandchildren Shannon Sink of Welcome, Stephanie and Brian Barber of Midway, Jeremy and Brenda Sink of Winston-Salem, Bryon and Hope McDaniel of King, and Todd and Vie McDaniel of Clemmons and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Brianna Sink, Devin and Emma McDaniel, Kaitlyn, Danielle and Jonathan McDaniel; a sister, Urma Morgan of New Castle, Pa; a brothers, Carl Fennell and Wayne and wife, Ruth, all of New Castle, Pa.; and loving niece, Carol Brock and husband, Rick.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home.
