Lu Ellen Routh Hooper

Lu Ellen Routh Hooper, 90, of Willoughby Boulevard, Greensboro, NC died Saturday, August 8. 2015, at her home. A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday August 15, 2015 at West Market United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, where she was a member, with the Rev. Pam Strader and the Rev. Dan Martin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Gathering Space. Mrs. Hooper was born 1924, in Wake County to Rufus F. Routh and Edith J. Routh and grew up in Asheboro North Carolina. She was a 1945 graduate of The Woman’s College of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), and was very proud of her time there during “the war years” and remained connected through the alumni association. She was an elementary school teacher for the Guilford County School System for a number of years. She lived in Thomasville, North Carolina for over 40 years and was a homemaker and community volunteer. She was known for her herb gardens and gave lectures about growing and decorating with herbs. She was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Thomasville and a former member of the Women’s Club of Thomasville. She lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Greensboro for the past eleven years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Hooper Dalton and a brother, Robert F. Routh. Surviving are a daughter Celia Routh Hooper of Greensboro (Craig Daniel Smith); a brother, Ben Dixon Routh of Huntersville; five grandchildren: Scott Dalton (Kelli), Brad Dalton (Allison), Corey Dalton (Lori), Daniel Smith, Thomas Smith; Five great-grandchildren, Ragan Dalton, Jackson Dalton, Leah Diana Dalton, Jonah Dalton and Kayleigh McCarthy. The family wishes to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. Memorial gifts may be made to the Lu Ellen Routh Hooper Fund, at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, P.O. Box 26170, Greensboro NC, 27402, a special fund to help students and faculty at her alma mater in the School of Health and Human Sciences.
