Lucille Hanes Smith Wray, of Fryes Creek Lane, Clemmons, formerly of Bowers Road, Lexington, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the age of 76. She had battled cancer for 11 months and had been seriously ill for two weeks.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ, Holly Grove Road, Lexington. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Stephanie Allred, 269 Amber Lane, Lexington.
Mrs. Wray was born August 14, 1934, in Davidson County, to Baxter Eugene and Effie Mae Berrier Hanes. She was the youngest of eight children. She was a graduate of Reeds High School in 1952 and Ashmore Business College. On June 20, 1953, she was married to William Colen Smith and they were married for 47 and a half years. She was employed with the Davidson County Schools Administrative office for 25 years, retiring in 1996. Mrs. Wray was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ for 57 years. She had served on the church consistory both as a Deacon and as an Elder. She served as a teacher in the lower classes for many years and was a member of the adult Sunday school class. She had been a member of the Woman’s Guild for 57 years. She was a volunteer with the Holly Grove Meals on Wheels. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Colen Smith; infant son, William Colen Smith Jr.; brothers, Holland, Eugene, Shady, Clyde and Hoyle; sisters, Gurla Mae Freedle and Bertie Swicegood.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories daughters, Stephanie Allred and husband, Rick, Valerie Osborne and husband, Clint; and grandchildren, Logan and Kendal Allred and Keaton and Larsen Osborne. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hanes, Ailene Hanes, and Wilma Hanes. On May 20, 2006, she was married to Carl Dillard Wray, who passed away May 2, 2008. Surviving are stepchildren Joy and Roy Tucker of Columbia, S.C., Toni and Michael Jones, Tim and Sheila Wray, Pam and Steve Sink, Penny and Rick Trotter, all of Thomasville; and four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
