Manly Holdt Byerly, 91, of Peachtree Street, died Friday, January 13, 2012, at Brian Center Nursing Home. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ray Howell 3rd officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Byerly was born September 22, 1920, in Davidson County, to Edward Cleveland Byerly and Betty Chloe Aderholdt Byerly. He was a graduate of Welcome High School; High Point College and attended one year of law school at Duke University prior to entering into the U.S. Marine Corp and later being drafted by the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He was a lifelong realtor and owner of Byerly Realty and Auction Co. He was a past President of the Board of Realtors and Lexington Kiwanis Club; and a member of First Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brother, James E. Byerly; and sisters, Helen Frances Byerly and Emma Mae Byerly. Surviving are his loving wife, Norma Small Byerly of the home; sons, John Byerly and wife, Sabine, of Baltimore, Md., Tim Byerly and wife, Rebecca, of Lexington, and Ben Byerly and wife, Lisa, of Birmingham, Al.; stepson, Reynolds Shoaf and wife, Katherine, of Lexington; stepdaughters, Stephanie Biesecker and husband, Eric, of Greensboro, and Jennifer Turlington and husband, Brian, of Lexington; and 12 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Lexington Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 1951, Lexington, NC 27293; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
