Margaret Spruill Smith, 87, of Piedmont Crossing, formerly of Westover Drive, Lexington, NC died Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Piedmont Crossing. The funeral will be at 3p.m. Friday, August 8 at First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jim Martin, Rev. Jill Alventosa Brown and Rev. Jeremy Troxler officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born October 17, 1920 in Rowan County to James Franklin Spruill and Flossie Harris Spruill. She was a 1937 graduate of Lexington High School and served as president of both her Junior and Senior High School Class. She was a 1941 graduate of Duke University and taught 4th grade in the Winston-Salem School System. Mrs. Smith was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church. She had served as Sunday School Superintendent and on many church committees including Administrative Board, Altar Guild, Circle Chairman, and a member of United Methodist Women. She had been a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader, as well as a member of the Lexington Charity League, Lexington Garden Club, and Sorosis Book Club. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dr. David C. Smith of the home; a son, D. Clark Smith and wife, Pat, of Lexington; a daughter, Vaughan Smith Long of Greensboro; her grandchildren: Scott David Long and wife Lauren; Margaret Long Troxler and husband Jeremy, David C. Smith III; Alden H. Smith, Robert S. Smith; Jodi P. Burkholder and husband Adam, and Jason B. Pardue; and her great-grandchildren, Isabella Long, Ada Troxler and Gabe Long; and her sisters, Dorothy S. Haltiwanger and husband, John, of Rockville, Md., and Helen S. Brinkley and husband, Walter of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 PM Friday in the Church Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 310 South Main Street, Lexington, NC 27292.
