Marie Hanes

Mrs. Marie Byerly Hanes, 101, of Hoover Road, passed away on Saturday, February 24 at her daughter’s home with her loving family by her side.

A funeral service will be held at 4pm Tuesday, February 27th at Good Hope Church with Pastor Johnny Lord officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Mrs. Hanes will lie in state at Davidson Funeral Home from 3-5pm Monday.

Mrs. Hanes was born March 24, 1922 in Davidson County to William Preston Byerly and Pearl Elizabeth Zimmerman Byerly.  She was a lifelong member of Good Hope Church, and had been a member of the Women’s Bible Sunday School Class and Rainbow Circle.  She served on many church committees and was the oldest living member of the church.  Along with working on the family farm, she retired from Davidson County Schools after 32 years, working as the cafeteria manager at Reedy Creek Elementary and North Davidson High School.  She always loved cooking and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.  She loved trips to the mountains and was a big “Elvis” fan. She loved her family, friends, and church family.

Preceding her in death were her loving husband, Earnest Clinton Hanes, who passed away in 1995, her daughter, Carolyn Bennett; her granddaughter, Natalie Adkins; her sons-law, Eugene Hall and James Perkins; her brothers, Clarence Byerly and W.A. Byerly; and her sisters, Mary Freedle, Ethel Freedle, and Grace Hege.

She is survived by her daughters, Betty Hall, Shirley Perkins, Nell Beck (Eddy), Donna Chapman (Roy), and Kathy Adkins (Steve); son-in-law, Gordon Bennett; 14 grandchildren, Terry Hall, Deborah Hussey (Dale), Maria LeBaron, Clinton Perkins, Todd Perkins, Michael Beck (Lori), Stacy Byram (Shawn), Carey Adkins, Tiffany Richardson (Beau), Nathan Link (Lauren), Dena Marie Rosen (Chris), Christy Cox (Bobby), Sara Chapman (Eric), and C.J. Dotson (Stephen); 31 great-grandchildren, 12 great great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Pauline Everhart, and Ruby Freedle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Good Hope Church, 10253 Hampton Road, Lexington NC 27295 or to the donor’s choice.
