Martha Smith Power, age 75 of East Holly Grove Road, Lexington passed away Friday (1-23-09) at Forsyth Medical Center, after a serious illness of two months. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday (1-26-2009) at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ, with Rev. Jimmy Norred officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Martha was born in Davidson County ,March 3, 1933, to Sydney Franklin Smith and Virgil Everhart Smith. She was a life long member of Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ, and held many offices in the local church and the Conference. A member and Past President of Lexington Woman’s Club, and a lifetime member of the North Carolina Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Past President of the American Cancer Society, Lexington office, and Past President of the Local Community Concert Series. A graduate of Davis-Townsend High School, Catawba College, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She taught school at Central Davidson High School for twenty years and was named Davidson County Teacher of the Year in 1975.
Surviving are: husband, Jack Power of the home; two daughters, Beverly Gobble and husband Ron of Salisbury, and Ramona Robertson and husband Jim of Archdale; four grandchildren, Meredith Gobble, Caroline McIntyre and husband Joshua, Cheryl Hancock and husband Tom and Stefanie Robertson; two great-grandchildren, Hollie and Anna Grace Hancock; three sisters, Joyce Varner of Archdale, Shirley Koontz of Lenoir and Janice Abernathy of Lexington; one brother Max Smith of Lexington.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 pm Sunday (1-25-09) at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
