Martha Reita Leonard Young, departed this life on January 7, 2010.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at First Baptist Church on West Third Avenue with the Rev. Dr. Ray N. Howell 3rd and Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the church parlor at 1 p.m. preceding the service.
Martha was born November 27, 1921, in Lexington, to Willie and Hattie Sink Leonard. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1938, attended The Woman’s College of University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and Draughn Business College in Winston-Salem. Martha’s career began at McCellan’s 5&10. She then worked in the offices of Coble Dairy and Lexington Hospital. She retired form Frank Ix & Sons as the payroll clerk. Martha joined First Baptist Church at the age of nine and was a life-long member. Martha’s enduring hobby was the sewing of many beautiful cross stitch creations. She made one-of-a-kind Christmas stockings for each family member and created angels for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Carol; a brother, Wendell; and a sister, Iris Leonard Parks.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Melvin Clement Young Sr.; three sons, Melvin “Micky” C. Young Jr. and wife, Jean Hough, of Lexington, Bruce Young and wife, Jane Swing Young of Greenville, and Douglas Young and wife, Nancy Yokeley Young of Lake Norman; six grandsons, Brian and wife, Leah, Tye and fiancée, Jodie, Bill and wife, Melissha, Zak and wife, Jamie, Chris and fiancée, Laura, and Jeff Young expecting two additional grandchildren.; six great-grandchildren, Haley, Taylor, Jenna, Bryson, Noah, Mira and Eden; and a sister, Becky Leonard Walser of Piedmont, SC.
