Murray Marvin Childress, 89, of Pine Valley Road, Salisbury, formerly of Haden Grove Church Road, Linwood, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyro United Methodist Church, where he was a member, by the Revs. Randy Foster and Jay Belk. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Mr. Childress was born March 29, 1920, in Carroll County, Va., to Daniel Elmer Childress and Mary Jane Hanes Childress. He was retired from North Carolina Finishing Co. in Spencer after 43 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Ethan Ryan Moore; brothers, Haywood Childress, Hasten Childress and Elmer Childress; a sister, Myrtle Grubb; and a son-in-law, John Melchor.
Surviving are his wife, Lila Mae Byerly Childress of the home; daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Melchor of Salisbury, Mrs. Glenda Greene and husband, Frank, of Sugar Hill, Ga., and Mrs. Murray Sink and husband, Jerry, of Lexington; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Cornelia Bennett of Thomasville; and his special friend and Yorkie, Jazzy.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of the daughter, 121 Happy Hollow Court, Lexington.
