Lexington

Mary Etta Hanes, of Lexington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on March 18, 2026, after an extended illness. She was born on May 2, 1941, in Lexington, North Carolina, to the late Richard Odell Smith and Addie Mae Smith.

A lifelong resident of Davidson County, Mary Etta graduated from West Davidson High School in 1959. She began her working years while still in high school, where she served hot dogs in Reeds for the well-known Jim Hunt—an experience she would often recall with a smile. She later dedicated 30 years of service to R.J. Reynolds, where she worked faithfully until her retirement. After retirement from RJR she managed and worked alongside her husband managing rental property.

Mary Etta was first and foremost the heart of her home as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose life revolved around caring for her family. She was known for her strength, her steady presence, and her no-nonsense approach to life. She enjoyed skiing and boating, work and anything related to supporting her children and grandchildren.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Shuford Smith, Carolyn Smith, and Odell Smith.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Eugene Hanes; her sons, Marty Scott Hanes and Derek Todd Hanes; and her siblings, Harold Smith, Shirley Lanier, Franklin Smith, Glenda Smith. Grandchildren, Miles Hanes (Jessica), Currie Hanes (Harlee), and Palmer Hanes. Great granddaughter, Mary Grace Hanes.

Mary Etta will be remembered for her resilience, her quiet strength, and the love she gave so freely to her family. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled and the lives she touched.

A Funeral service will be held on Friday March 20th at 11am at Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Lexington.
