Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Mary Nance Haynes Gupton (Mary Lou) went to rest in the arms of her everlasting Father, peacefully in her sleep on May 29, 2023, at her home. She was born on June 12, 1935, in Mooresville, North Carolina. Her parents are the late Carl Robbie Nance and Sarah Spry Nance of Lexington and big sister, the late Patsy Nance Crowell of Winston-Salem.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald Carl Haynes (1934-1999). Mary Lou and Don met in the 10th grade at Lexington Senior High School, and it was love at first sight for both of them. They were happily married for 44 years surrounded with love and family gatherings of the Haynes and Nance families, including their children, grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They enjoyed their special trips to the mountains and beach and watching their grandchildren grow up.
She is survived by her husband, Reverend Will Johnson Gupton of Winston-Salem for 14 plus years. During their marriage, they enjoyed many hours visiting with the Nance, Haynes, and Gupton families and friends; singing and attending Calvary Baptist Church; listening to concerts; traveling to Rocky Mount, Drexel, and Myrtle Beach; and attending numerous church services and celebrations. Johnson was a true gift and blessing from God for mom.
She is also survived by her daughter Donna H. McCachern (Larry) of Harrisburg; daughter, the late Amelia H. Smith (Bill) of Clemmons; and son, Christopher C. Haynes (Andrea) of Walnut Cove; grandchildren- Robert W. McCachern (Erika) of Harrisburg, Steve W. Smith (Andrea) of Huntersville, Michelle S. Wence (Bryan) of Apex, David C. Smith of Clemmons, Meredith S. Coltman (Chris) of Durham, Ariel Haynes and Aiden Haynes of Walnut Cove; great grandchildren- Natalie M. Smith, Ethan W. McCachern, Steven W. Smith, Jr. , Andrew H. Wence, Macy E. Smith, Wyatt J. Wence, and Leah C. Smith; and many sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
