Mary Bowman Mcwhorter

Mary Bowman McWhorter, 94, of Hilltop Drive, died Monday, March 30, 2015, at her home. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jamie Armstrong, Dr. Lee Dukes, Rev. David Jordan and Rev. Barrett Jordan officiating. A private burial will be prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Mrs. McWhorter was born February 7, 1921, in Sabine Parish, La., to Jesse Daniel Bowman and Jimmie Jackson Bowman. She had served in the U.S. Army as a nurse during World War II and later was a Registered Surgical nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital for many years. In 2002 she received the Lay Person of the Year Award for her ten year service as president of the Altar Guild. She was an active member of Group 10 United Methodist Women. Mrs. McWhorter also volunteered for the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels and was an avid reader. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Darrell Chester McWhorter; brother, Jesse Daniel Bowman Jr.; and sisters, Jamie Annette Anderson, and Annette Amarinthea Helms. Surviving are sons, Dr. John Bowman McWhorter and wife Barbara and Dr. Thomas Smith McWhorter and wife Suzanne, all of Lexington; daughter, Carol McWhorter Jordan and husband Rev. David Curtis Jordan Jr. of Rock Hill, SC.; grandchildren, Rev. Barrett Jordan and wife Judy, Tim Jordan and wife Nicole, Lawson McWhorter and wife Amy, Blake McWhorter and wife Aimee, and Graham McWhorter and wife Kim; and great-grandchildren, Alley, Jeremiah, Carly, Grayson, Brennan, Owen, Mollie, Madeline, Gigi, Alden, Natalie, Julia and Jack. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
