Mary Lee Swicegood Miller, age 93, of Eastside Drive, died Saturday November 7, 2009 at the Hinkle Hospice Home after a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Second Reformed United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Joe Coltrane and Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Lexington City Cemetery.
Mrs. Miller was born November 8, 1915 in Tyro North Carolina to the late Adam Cicero Swicegood and Lula Koonts Swicegood. She was married to the late James Thomas Miller for 62 years. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband as well as 8 brothers and 2 sisters. Mrs. Miller graduated from Tyro High School where she played basketball, and later attended NC State College. She taught at Davidson Community College until her retirement. She grew up as a Lutheran at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Tyro, which her father and brothers helped to build. After marrying and having a son, she joined her husband’s church, Second Reformed United Church of Christ. Mrs. Miller was a very active member for 73 years, where she taught Sunday School for 35 years and was superintendent of the Children’s Sunday Program for many years. She also served as a member of the Sarah Circle. She delivered meals to bereaved families and provided rides to children and adults to church when needed. At age 91, she was awarded the Pearle P. Leonard Award for Christian Service. Mrs. Miller was very active in her community, being a member of many organizations. She enjoyed her Card Club, her State Retired Teachers Club and other social activities.
Surviving are, a son, Robert W. Miller, Sr. and wife, Millie, of Burlington; two grandsons, Robert W. Miller, Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina and James Craven Miller of Oakland, California, one granddaughter, Heilig Miller Barnwell and husband, Steve, of Burlington, two great grandchildren; Amelia Barnwell and Mac Barnwell, as well as several nieces and nephews, especially Margaret and Tommy Clodfelter, and Jeanette Russell.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Tuesday at the church prior to the service
