Mcdaniel "Mac" Harless

McDaniel “Mac” Harless age 86 of Winston Salem passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Ashe County on August 27, 1927, to the late David and Nellie Little Harless. Mac grew up and was raised on the family farm until his departure for service in the Navy after high school. On July 23, 1949, he married Alene Fletcher. Mac held several positions in West Jefferson that included serving as a Funeral Director and working in the copper mine. In 1964, the family moved to Hillsville, VA. There he was personnel manager for Sprague Electric until his retirement. Mr. Harless served in many positions at Hillsville First Baptist Church including Sunday school teacher, deacon, choir singer, and on occasion filling in as choir director. In his spare time, Mac loved to work in his garden, roses, and yard. Mac loved to travel and associate himself with family and friends. In 2005, Mac and Alene moved to Winston Salem, where he became an active member of Griffith Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. Most importantly, Mac was a faithful servant to the Lord. Including parents, Mac was preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Mac is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Alene; a daughter, Phyllis Hatter and husband Burdette; a grandson, Austin Hatter, all of Loisville, KY; a son Danny Harless of Winston Salem; a sister, Martha Jane Lane and husband Frankie of Millers Creek; a brother, Gwyn Ersol Harless and wife Grace of West Jefferson; and longtime friends, Herbert A. Snyder, Ruth, Todd, and Ashley Miller. Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Monday, November 25, 2013 followed by a service at 3:00 pm at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Griffith Baptist Church 1987 Old Salisbury Road Winston Salem, NC 27127. Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is assisting the family.
