Melvin Vestal Hanes, age 98 of Alston Brook formerly of North NC Highway 150 Lexington passed away Saturday at Alston Brook. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday (11-4-2008) at Friendship United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bobby Swaim and Rev. Barry Lemons officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Melvin was born in Davidson County September 2, 1910 to Thurston T. Hanes and Minnie Leonard Hanes. He was a retired employee of the NC Department of Transportation. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years Ethel Miller Hanes on March 30, 1994, daughter-in-law Jane Hanes in 2008, three brothers, Duff, Oak and Cleve Hanes and a sister Vitues Koonts.
Surviving are: three sons, Richard Hanes and wife Patsy, Charles Hanes and Phil Hanes all of Lexington; two daughters, Debbie Bumgarner and husband Ricky and Diane Brittain and husband Harry all of Lexington; six grandchildren, Paul Brittain, John Brittain and wife Penny, Heather Hanes, Nathan Bumgarner, Amy Empson and husband Jason and Nick Hanes, and six great-grandchildren, one brother Foy Hanes of Lexington.
The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 until 8 pm Monday and at other times at the home on Highway 150.
