Melvin was born on January 21, 1954, in Davidson County, to the late Foy Lee James and Ethel Hartman James. He found joy in the simplicities of life and understood that happiness came from everyday experiences. Watching the birds join together at the bird feeder, taking pleasure in watching the flowers bloom he so diligently sewed, and spending time in the yard working to keep it beautiful were all ways he enjoyed his days.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn, Garland, and Vernon, James.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Shirley, of the home; daughters, Andrea Swicegood (Corey Simerson), of Lexington, and Julie Sink (Scotty), of Lexington; four grandchildren, Trad Sink (Cheyenne Harp), Hali Sink (Chandler Evernhart), Emily Swicegood (Dylan Wright), and Jake Swicegood; brothers, Grady James (Shirley), of Clemmons, and Van James, of Lexington.
