Melvin Clement Young Sr. passed from his earthly life on Monday, May 22nd. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lexington with a reception immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. Melvin was born on July 16, 1917 in High Point to Robert Lee Young and Edna Clement Young and his youthful years were spent in the mill village along the Yadkin River. His Father’s company sponsored a Boy Scout Troop which Melvin was active and successful in, becoming an Eagle Scout and winning first place at the Council Jamboree for several years. He served 16 years as a camp counselor at the Boy Scout Camp of Uwharrie, teaching hundreds of boys to swim. He also assisted in setting up the first Order of the Arrow at Camp Uwharrie and was the assistant Scoutmaster selected to travel with scouts to the World’s Fair in 1939. At age 20 he became the Scoutmaster of Troop 47. Later Melvin moved to Lexington and joined the First Baptist Church and assisted with setting up Troop 229 where he served as Scoutmaster for 32 years. The prestigious Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor in Scouting for a Scoutmaster, was presented to Melvin and a scholarship was setup in his honor. The Gold Circle was awarded to him for his lifetime achievement in Scouting. Metropolitan Life Insurance was Melvin’s career until retirement. Melvin was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and will be remembered for his daily emails of devotions, prayers, stories and poems sent over many years. Melvin was happily married to Martha Leonard, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his three sons, Micky and wife Jean of Lexington, Bruce and wife Jane of San Antonio TX, Douglas and wife Nancy of Charlotte and six grandsons Bill and wife Melissha, Zak and wife Jamie, Tye and wife Jody, Brian and wife Leah, , Chris and Jeff Young as well as 13 great-grandchildren.Memorials may be made to: Melvin Young Boys Scout Campership Endowment Fund, Old North State Council, 1405 Westover Terrace, Greensboro, NC 27408 Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
