Mildred McKinney Gee, 91 died September 8, 2006 at Fitzgerald Health Center, Arbor Acres, in Winston-Salem.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 11, at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with Pastor Lee Zehmer officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery.
Mrs. Gee, a native of Shelby, NC, was born Mildred Lucille McKinney, September 15, 1914, to Ezra Festus and Alice Poston McKinney. She was valedictorian of her class at Shelby High School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University in 1934 at the age of 19. After teaching school at Lattimore High School, Cleveland County, NC for five years, she married Felix Gee and moved to Lexington North Carolina where she lived until she and her husband moved to Arbor Acres in 2004.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lexington where she served as Sunday school teacher, President of the Presbyterian Women, and was Chairperson for Spiritual Growth for Women at the Presbytery level. She was a member of Sorosis Book Club and the Charity League of Lexington and was on the Board of Directors of Barium Springs Presbyterian Home for Children.
Mrs. Gee had an intense love of learning which continued until her death. She had a special interest in genealogy and published her paternal ancestral line in a book, A McKinney Family History, which she shared with descendants of Daniel McKinney (born September 15, 1742) in many states. As a hobby, she enjoyed playing bridge with two groups including a couples club that lasted 50 years. She enjoyed correspondence and will be remembered for her many kind and thoughtful notes to friends and family.
Mrs. Gee was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Felix O. Gee, and a brother Troy V. McKinney. Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Gee Akers of Orange Park, FL, and M. Elizabeth Gee of Winston-Salem; and two grandsons, Michael Gordon Akers, Jr. and William Gee Akers, both of Casselberry, FL.
The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home, 24 E. Third Street, Lexington, NC from 5:00 TO 7:00 PM Sunday evening, September 10. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 586, Lexington, NC 27293 to the Davidson County Community College, P. O. Box 1287 Lexington, NC 27293 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
