Mildred Esther Strickland Hayes

Mildred Esther Strickland Hayes, 76, of Carolina Avenue, died Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.  The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Spruce Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Coats and Rev. Noah Frye officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter on Michael Road.  Mrs. Hayes was born January 20, 1941, in Columbus County, to Peter Homer Strickland and Lucy Hayes Strickland. She enjoyed volunteering for numerous local retirement centers and for 36 and a half years she was an assembler at Duracell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Strickland.  Surviving are her husband, Harry Lee Hayes, of the home, a  daughter, Karen Hayes Driver of Lexington; granddaughter, Lucy Driver of Lexington; and sisters, Ernestine Clewis and Irene Hahn and husband Joe, all of Cerro Gordo.  Memorials may be made to Crisis Ministry, 107 East First Avenue, Lexington, NC 27292; or Spruce Street Missionary Baptist Church, 407 Spruce Street, Lexington, NC 27292.
