Myra Ellen Griggs Thacker, age 70, of Overbrook Drive, Lexington passed away surrounded by family on Friday, April 17, 2020.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral service will be limited to family; however, the service will be live streamed on the First Baptist Church YouTube Channel which can be accessed through the church website, www.fbclex.org or the link (First Baptist Church, Lexington, NC USA YouTube Channel).Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.

She was born on April 24, 1949 in Charlotte, NC to Aubrey and Frances (Arrowood) Griggs.  Myra graduated from Morganton High School and obtained her bachelor’s degree from Campbell College.  She later obtained a master’s degree in library science from North Carolina A&T.

Myra was an English instructor and librarian at Central Davidson High School where she made lifelong relationships with many teachers and students.  Every mind was important to her and she took the time to reach those minds.  She loved to engage students, challenge boundaries, and open more possibilities than ever imagined.  Her love for students knew no bounds and she often saw more in them than they saw in themselves.

Myra was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church.  She sang in choir, played handbells, and worked on various committees.  But her first love in church was working with children.  From teaching Sunday School to leading a children’s choir, Myra dedicated herself to the children recognizing that “to such as them belonged the kingdom of God”.

Myra valued the relationships she had with each and every person that was a part of her life.  More than anything else, she loved being a mother and grandmother.  She reveled in her family’s love and cherished her time watching it grow.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, John T. Thacker, Jr.; her children Eryn Myers (Jon) of Lexington and Jay Thacker (Christine) of Deep Gap; and her grandchildren Grace Myers, Wade Myers, and Evan Thacker.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, West 3 rd Avenue, P.O. Box 436, Lexington, NC  27293.
