Nancy Carolyn Potts, 81, formerly of Greenway Drive, died Monday, September 12, 2016, at Brookstone Retirement Center. A graveside service will be held at 3 pm Friday, September 16 at Lexington City Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Ray Howell III. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home. Mrs. Potts was born March 14, 1935, in Davidson County, to Lowery Smithton Potts Sr. and Minnie Augusta Sechriest Potts. She graduated from Lexington Senior High Class of 1953. She entered Catawba College that September as a day student and worked at Mack’s Five and Dime Store in uptown Lexington in the evening. While at Catawba, she was a member of the Writer’s Club Kapa Tau Kappa and Phi Epsilon. She served as a reporter for the Catawba “Pioneer” for three years and as assistant editor her junior year. She was Editor-in-Chief of the Pioneer” for the 1956-57 year, She was named to National recognition in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1956. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Catawba College June 3, 1957. She was one of 41 recipients of scholorships to attend Duke University’s 1961 summer session. She attended Graduate School at UNC-Chapel Hill where she received her Master of Education Degree on August 28, 1965. She began teaching in the newly built Central Davidson High School 1957 – 1965. She then visited the Davidson County Industrial Education Center Campus, which was to become the Community College and began her career as English instructor at Davidson County Community College on September 1, 1965 and where she retired on July 30, 1995. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas E. Holton Jr. whom she married July 15, 1977; a special uncle, Stuart Sechriest; and aunt, Edna Koonts. Surviving are a brother, Larry Smithton Potts Jr. of Lexington; and a beloved niece, Deborah Sue Rogers of Lexington. The family has requested in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Davidson County Community College, where a scholarship fund will be established in Nancy’s name, PO Box 1287, Lexington NC 27293; Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292; Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215; or any other charity of the donor’s choice.
