Nolan Phillips

Nolan Coltan Phillips, Jr. 79 died Sunday September 28, 2008 in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Tyro United Methodist Church with the Revs. Randy Foster and Jane Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery with military graveside rights. Mr. Phillips was born in Lovingston, VA on March 30, 1929, to the late Nolan and Elsie Phillips, Sr. He attended Guilford and Forsyth Tech and Catawba College. He entered the US Air Force at age 17 and served for 20 years before returning and went into farming. Later started working at Lexington Senior High in the maintenance department, where he was known as “Fix it Phil”. He later started teaching Industrial maintenance at the school. After several years he moved back to Virginia to farm and raise cattle. When his health began to fail he returned to Lexington where he did maintenance for Tyro United Methodist Church, which he loved dearly. At his church he was a trustee, taught Sunday school, the Senior Men’s Class and was very involved in other areas of the Church. Mr. Phillips was an avid golfer. He loved sports, his favorites being football, baseball and racing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Phillips; brother, Harold Phillips; a sister, JoAnn; adopted daughter, Shirley. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Phillips of the home; a son, Nolan C. Phillips III and wife, Denise, of Nakina; daughter, Wanda McMurray and husband, Allen, of New York; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; an adopted son, Lester Phillips; an adopted daughter, Linda Phillips; stepsons, James Frizzell and Keith Frizzell; a brother, Kenneth Phillips of Washington; and a sister, Barbara. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
