Norma Griffith

Mrs. Norma Lee Close Griffith, 89, formerly of Long St, died Saturday, November 01 at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Tuesday, November 4 at First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. Lee Zehmer. A private interment will be held at Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. Mrs. Griffith was born June 24, 1925 in Tucker County, WV to Luke and Marion Mulvey Close. Norma graduated from Thomas High School in Thomas, West Virginia in May 1943. She graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing in August 1947, where she was valedictorian. She was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society at UVA. She was a retired nurse, having worked for Dr. Bill Bingham, Dr. Hunter Strader, and later for Link-Taylor. Throughout the years, Norma volunteered for Piedmont Crossing, Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross and the Life Center. She served as a deacon, elder, circle leader, and several committee chairs at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for 59 years. Her husband, James Griffith, and her son, Mark Griffith, preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Jeff Griffith and wife, Beckey, of Lexington; her daughter-in-law, Susan Griffith, of Greenville, SC; her sisters, Betty Melkus and husband, Ted, of Christiansburg, VA, and Jeanie Fisher and husband, Jack, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and her grandchildren, Brian Griffith and fiancee, Stacy Hawken, Chad Griffith and wife, Caroline, and Katie Griffith.
