Norman Eugene Essick Sr. 89 of Friendship Church Road, Lexington passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. The funeral will be 4:00 pm Friday April 8, 2011 at Friendship United Methodist Church where he was a very active member until his health declined, conducted by Rev. Patrick Snow and Rev. Barry Lemons, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter on Waitman Road.
Mr. Essick was born January 1, 1922 in Davidson County, to Norman William Essick and Gertha Clayton Phillips Essick. He was a retired carpenter for Craver-Essick Construction and also worked for Dixie Furniture. At his church, he was a member of the choir and a member of the Friendship Class. He was a member of Reeds Civitan Club, VFW Post 3074 and American Legion Reeds Post 162 and honorably served his country in The US Army in WWII. He was a member of the 1st Board of Directors for Davidson Water and served on several school administrative councils. His wife, Dot Kellette Essick preceded him in death November 27, 2007.
Surviving are a daughter: Julia Swicegood and husband Webster of Lexington; Sons, Eugene Essick of Lexington and friend Reta McAlister, Clay Essick and wife Tina of Winston Salem; Grandchildren, Meredith Swicegood Duffey and husband Chris, John Swicegood and wife Landace of Lexington, Matt Essick and Will Essick of Winston Salem. One brother, J.E. Essick of Lexington and a Sister-in Law, Helen Hinkle of Welcome, He is also survived by a Niece and 2 Nephews.
