Norman Thomas Foster, 91 of the Midway community passed away Tuesday morning at his residence. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday 10-14-2011 at the Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro.
To honor Norman’s wishes no visitation will be held.
Norman was born in Forsyth County, on July 28, 1920 to Charles Thomas and Lora Mae Reins Foster. He spent most of his life in the Kernersville area, was a retired engineer from Southern Railway. For many years he volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, was the local senior swimming champ for Forsyth County and was chosen as a citizen of the week. He was a world traveler, visiting 98 countries including, Russia, The South Pole, Australia, China, Africa, Europe and all 50 states. He personally photographed presidents from Roosevelt to Clinton. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and pictures with school classes, churches, boy scouts, and individuals. In his later years he enjoyed joining various Elder Hostel programs dealing mostly, with the Civil War and the Wild West; and enjoyed his association with “The Cowboys” on their monthly viewing of early cowboy movies. Norman also authored several articles and a book dealing with his family history. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded by two brothers, Olin Charles and Howard Reins Foster.
Surviving are; nieces Linda McGlamery and husband Vann of Mt. Pleasant, N.C. and Loretta Griggs and husband Glenn of Midway; a nephew Stephen C. Foster and wife Phyllis of Winston-Salem; 9 great nieces and nephews and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.
He treasured his “adoptive son” Tom McCuistion and wife Cherrie of Asheboro, and his great niece and caregiver for the last decade Carrie Foster, who will be forever thankful for her time with him. He touched the lives of many with his warm smile and personality and was affectionally known as “Uncle Norman”.
In lieu of flowers memorials to honor Norman may be directed to the charity of choice.
