Oscar "Kirk" Kirkus, Jr.

Oscar “Kirk” Kirkus, Jr., 89 of South County Home Road, Lexington, died Friday night at his home. Mr. Kirkus was born March 15, 1918 in Dodge County, Georgia to Oscar Kirkus, Sr. and Creacy Dowdy Kirkus. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII. Mr. Kirkus was retired from Norman’s of Salisbury and he worked for 30 years at Siceloff Manufacturing as head sewing machine mechanic. In later years he worked as a self-employed sewing machine mechanic. He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday in the Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Pastors Ralph Byrd, Henry Waiters, and Jack McVeigh will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites by Randolph County Honor Guard. Mr. Kirkus is survived by his wife of 69 years Helen Byerly Kirkus of the home; four sons Doyle Kirkus and wife Betty Jean of Lexington, Oscar H. Kirkus and wife Nancy of Southmont, Larry Kirkus and wife Lois of Gate City, Va., and Kenneth Kirkus and wife Brenda of Linwood; two daughters Glenda Everhart and husband Jerry, and Diane Hazzard and husband Frank all of Lexington. Mr. Kirkus is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, PO Box 1941, Lexington, NC 27293.
