Pastor Clyde David Akers, better known as Preacher Clyde, 70, after declining health for 2 years stepped into Heaven, Sunday January 21, 2024, at the Davidson Rehabilitation Center in Lexington.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Freedom Baptist Church, with Pastors Nathan Brinkley and Darrell Cox officiating. The family will see friends Friday night from 6-8 pm at Davidson Funeral Home. His passion was his faith, church, family. Clyde was a loving brother, uncle, and friend who will be missed by all. In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his brothers, Elbert Lee Akers, Jr., and James Richard Akers, Sr.
Clyde was born to Elbert Lee Akers, Sr. and Sarah Catherine Blount Akers on April 9, 1953, in Raeford, NC. Clyde’s family moved to Lexington, where he grew up with eight brothers and sisters. He worked at the Peerless Mattress Company for ten years. While working at Peerless, Clyde accepted the call from God to preach. The Freedom Baptist Church voted Pastor Clyde Akers in as their Pastor in 1979, where he has been for forty-three years. Pastor Clyde is known throughout Lexington, as a friend to all people. He loved and cared about anyone he came in contact with. He preached in six nursing homes each month for many years, and preached thousands of funerals over the course of those forty-three years as Pastor.
Left to cherish his memories are his sisters, Mary Akers Brinkley (Preston) of Mocksville, Patricia Akers Chesson (Rick) of Lexington, brothers, Lloyd Alfred Akers (Donna) of Salina, Kansas, Charles Wayne Akers, Joe Vester Akers (Beth) both of Lexington, and Jack Timothy Akers, Sr. of Myrtle Beach, SC. Special family, Jimmy and Bonnie King, and Brandon Hall of Lexington; many nephews, nieces, great nephews, nieces, cousins and the members of Freedom Baptist Church, Lexington.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff, the aides, the PA’s and everyone from Lillian’s Way that took care of him with such love, care and respect.
The family would like to also thank the staff at Davidson Funeral Home for all their care and support they have shown the family during the loss of Pastor Clyde.
