Patrick "Pat" (known as "Paddy" to family and friends in Ireland) Griffin, age 89, of Lexington, passed away peacefully at his home on October 9, 2026.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, Lexington, NC.
A funeral mass will follow at 2:00 in the sanctuary.
Burial will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 20,2026.
Born in London while his Irish parents were working abroad, Patrick was the son of the late Edward "Ned" and Margaret "Maggie" Bailey Griffin. He was raised in Ireland, and his first job was with the Irish Post Office. At age 19, he moved to the United States, initially landing in Boston. He soon joined the U.S. Air Force, proudly serving for four years and nine months, including being stationed in Madrid, Spain. Following his discharge, he settled in New York City and began a dedicated 37-year career with J.P. Morgan.
As the oldest of eleven children, Patrick was a devoted and steady presence for a large and loving family. He was married to the love of his life, Loretta, with whom he shared 56 years of devotion and family life. Outside of his career, he enjoyed a rich and active life. He loved to play golf, a passion he maintained throughout his adult life and well into retirement, even taking a post-retirement job working as a ranger at a golf course. The elusive hole-in-one eluded him, but he did shoot his age on two occasions. He also dedicated his time to coaching youth soccer and refereeing. Holding a prominent role in the youth soccer program on Long Island, he was known to many and could always be recognized wearing his blue bucket hat.
A man of diverse interests, he enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, cheering on Boston sports teams and Notre Dame football, and traveling home to Ireland as often as he could. His warmth, wit, and steadfast devotion to his family left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Loretta M. Griffin, who passed away on September 30, 2025; his brothers Eamonn Griffin, Colm Griffin, Jimmy Griffin, and Stephen Griffin; and his sisters Maureen Curran and Aine Staunton.
Left to cherish his memory are his three sons, Sean P. Griffin, Eamonn M. Griffin, his wife Tess, and their son Finn, and Patrick T. Griffin; his surviving siblings and their spouses, including Johnny and Mary Griffin, Barbara and John Richardson, Margo and Michael Donohue, Tony and Gwenda Griffin, Noreen Griffin, and Martina Griffin; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Joanne Kenny, Thomas and Jeanne Kenny, and Kevin and Clare Kenny; extended family members Greg Gallagher and Carol Hall Kenny; longtime family friend Bill Bonomo; as well as a large circle of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
