On October 2, 2010, Sonny Poston, of Nottingham Drive, Lexington, triumphed over an eight-year battle with Alzheimers. He died peacefully with his relatives and Alston Brook “family” surrounding him.
He was born in Lexington, NC on November 30, 1940, to Paul W. Poston Sr. and Catherine Wright Poston (both deceased). His sister, Phyllis Poston Hill, also preceded him in death. He is survived by wife Dr. Jo Ann D. Poston of the home, and daughter Lisa Dow Poston, of Winston Salem, brothers-in-law L. Von Hill, of Lexington, and John Dow Dudley of Mesquite, Nevada, and nephews David Hill (Lexington), Dr. Keith Hill and wife Megan of Winston Salem, and John D. Dudley, Jr. of Colorado.
He was a graduate of Lexington Senior High School and Wake Forest University, where he was a record-holding swimmer and diver. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, and retired from the furniture industry after 32 years, as well as the staff of First Presbyterian Church.
A member of First Presbyterian, he was active in the music ministry, past Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and an Elder. He also held memberships in the Lexington Choral Society and the Twin City Track Club, and delivered Meals on Wheels.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 5th, at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Lee Zehmer officiating. Former and present members of the Choir Family of First Presbyterian and The Lexington Choral Society will be seated together immediately preceding the service.
