Charles Phillip “Phil” Head Sr., 81, of West Second Avenue, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at his home.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, by the Revs. Carl Lindquist and Jill Aventosa-Brown.
Mr. Head was born December 3, 1925, in Monroe County, Ga., to Harvey Huill Head and Georgia Broach Head. He attended Western Carolina College. Mr. Head was very active in community service, beginning as a very proud officer of the Lexington Police Department from 1947 to 1956 and later as a supervisor for the North Carolina Department of Corrections and Parole, and continuing to serve his community through elected positions. He was elected the Lexington City Council on December 9, 1985 for the West Ward and served for six years. We won at at-large seat and was re-elected in 1991, 1995 & 1999, serving a total of 18 years. He also served on the ElectriCities of NC Board of Directors from 1989-1995 where he was elected second vice president in 1992, first vice-president in 1993, and President in 1994. He served on the NC Municipal Power Agency as first alternate commissioner from 1995 to 2003. At First United Methodist Church, he served as a Sunday school teacher for 52 years, first teaching sixth grade and then as a rotating teacher for the adult classes. He was a counselor and a director of Camp Albert Butler for the church youth. He was chairmen of the Administrative Board, member of the Wesley Class and served as its president in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 he received the Western NC Conference Laity Service Award. On January 28, 1988 he had The Order of the Long Leaf Pine conferred upon him by Governor James G. Martin. This is the highest honor award to a NC Citizen for representing their integrity, learning and zeal. Mr. Head was on the founding members of the Lexington Tennis Association. He was very active in Lexington tennis for many years and won numerous championships. These include 2 Men’s Open Doubles City Championships with his son Phil Head, Jr., the first Men’s Challenger Singles Title, mixed doubles titles and father-son titles. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II on the destroyer USS Key as a gunner and beach head scout. He was a member of VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8, Amvet Post 13. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lyndal Leonard Head who died March 26, 2004; two brothers, John Head and Bob Head and a sister, Dorothy Head Bailey.
Surviving are a son, Charles Phillip “Phil” Head Jr. and Linda of Greer, S.C.; a daughter, Deborah Head Arnold and husband, Terry of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Daniel Siceloff of Chapel Hill, Cass Key and husband, Preston, of Gaithersburg, MD, Lindsay Siceloff Harne and husband, Jason, of Folsum, CA, Jessie Arnold Francese and husband, Brent of Weaverville, NC, Linni Head of Greenville, SC, Caleb Head of Charleston, SC, Anne Siceloff of Raleigh, and Charles Phillip Head, III and wife Julianne of Greer, SC and four great grandchildren, Casey Siceloff, Tori Head, Lizzie Head and Hayden Key
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home.
