Phillip Addison “Phil” Kennedy, 91, of Davidson County, passed away on May 26, 2026.
Born on March 18, 1935, to the late Woodrow Addison Kennedy and Mildred Kennedy, Phil was raised on a farm west of High Point in the Hasty Community, where he developed the strong work ethic, and sense of community that would define his life.
Phil earned his A.B. degree from High Point College and later received his Master’s degree from Appalachian State University. He dedicated nearly four decades to education, serving as a teacher, coach, and driver’s education instructor at Indian Trail and Sun Valley Schools in Union County from 1957 until 1962. In 1963, he became Principal of Fairview School, where he faithfully served until 1968. He then continued his career as Principal of Midway School from 1968 until his retirement in 1996.
Throughout his life, Phil was deeply involved in the communities he served. While living in Fairview, he was a charter member of the Fairview Fire Department, a Little League coach, and an officer in the Fairview PADA. After moving to Midway, he served as President of the Midway PADA and was an active member and officer of the Midway Lions Club. He was also involved with the Piedmont Camera Club and served as Vice President of the Southeastern Council of Camera Clubs.
Faith was an important part of Phil’s life. At Oak Forest United Methodist Church, he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and choir member. He was also a past member and Vice Chairman of the church’s After School Program.
Phil was an accomplished photographer whose talent and passion brought joy to many. He also enjoyed woodworking, model building, golf, and league bowling. Above all, he treasured his family, friends, and the countless students and colleagues whose lives he touched through his years in education and service.
In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Velva Ann Ruth Kennedy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Kenneth Kennedy and wife Sonia Hage Kennedy; his brother, Joe Kennedy and wife Diane Roberts Kennedy; his grandson, Dylan Addison; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Marie and Luke Addison; step-grandchildren, Selena Mae and Stephanie Marie; step great-granddaughter, Kennedy Grace; many adored nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his faithful furry companion, Buddy, affectionately known as “Little Man.”
A memorial service to honor Phil’s life will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Forest United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Oak Forest United Methodist Church.
