Rachel Burkhart Layton

Rachel Burkhart Layton, 93, of Lexington NC, passed away at her daughter’s home on Tuesday April 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was received into the arms of Jesus as her passing was a peaceful and full of love.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday April 16, 2026, at Forest Hill Memorial Park with Chaplin Chris Ehrlich officiating services.

There will be no formal visitation held.

Mrs. Layton was born March 6, 1933, in Davidson County to the late Glenn Wilson Burkhart and Regina Walker Burkart. Rachel was a member of Second Reformed Church and worked at Lexington Furniture in the Table Plant. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and always took care of her family and loved ones. She enjoyed working in her flower beds, spending time with her family and enjoyed going on family vacations to the beach until her declining heath. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 70 years, Donald “Don” Layton and brothers Harold G. Burkhart and Lindsay Paul Burkhart.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Vanzant (Ricky Sr.) of Lexington; son Donnie Layton (Lora) of Wallburg; one sister Jane Burkhart of Lexington; four grandchildren, Chris Beck (Leah) Ricky Vanzant Jr. (Dawn), Adam Layton, and Page Flannery (Dylan); and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Beck, Haley Vanzant, Caroline Vanzant and Adelle Layton.

The family would like to honor all the Hospice Staff for their wonderful care, kindness, compassion and support given to Rachel and her family.
