A. Ray Murphy, Sr., age 90 of Bethany Church Road, Winston-Salem died Thursday, February 14 at the Homestead.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 16 at Bethany United Church of Christ conducted by Rev. Jay Whitley with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mr. Murphy was born April 29, 1917 in Davidson County to George Murphy and Lenella Harmon Murphy. He was an avid farmer all his life and a supervisor with the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service. Later in life he retired from R J R Tobacco Co. He was a member of the Midway Lions Club since 1953 and had been named a Melvin Jones Fellow and given the Lion of Year award for 1995-1996. He was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ where he had served on the church board, as a Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the choir and Sunday School Teacher.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Pauline Dorsett Murphy, his parents, brothers Palmer Murphy, Clifton Murphy, Rayford Murphy and Varney Murphy and by sisters Artadale Everhart, Clarice Snyder, Lillian Hartman and Velna Smith.
He is survived by son A. Ray Murphy, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Midway, daughter Carol Murphy Warner and husband Brady of Leesburg, Va. grandchildren, Chris Murphy and wife Emily, Amy M. Hyatt and husband Craig, all of Midway, Rebecca Anton and husband Michael of New York, NY and Great Grandchildlren, Abigail Anton, Caroline Hyatt, Catie Hyatt and Ella Murphy.
The family will see friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the residence of Ray Murphy, Jr. 821 Bethaany Church Road.
