Rev. Joseph Elwood Goodman, 88, stepped into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Joey Van Goodman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and other times at the home.
Rev. Goodman was born on August 21, 1925, in Fleetwood, to Letcher and Cisco Church Goodman. He served his country proudly in World War II as a soldier in the U.S. Army. He served as Pastor of several churches through the years, including Southside Baptist Church of Lexington, where he served for over 30 years. In addition he spent over 30 years with Ford Motor Company, retiring from Liberty Lincoln-Mercury of Winston-Salem. He loved working the jumble puzzles in the newspaper, telling stories, watching television, riding his tractor, auto racing and telling people about Jesus. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Lyalls Goodman; and a daughter, Wanda Carol Goodman.
Surviving are four sons, Rev. Dr. Joey Goodman and wife Tiffany of Lexington, Bud Goodman and wife Nancy of Jefferson, Rev. Carl Goodman and wife Karen of King and Michael Goodman and wife Faith of Chattanooga, Tn.; two daughters, Barbara Gilley of Jefferson and Susan Richie and husband Cullen of Spanaway, WA.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
