Rev. Morris Hollifield

The Reverend Morris Shufford Hollifield, 87, formerly of Lexington, died Thursday, November 24 at Spartanburg Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC.    The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 28 at Jersey Baptist Church, by the Revs. Matt Rigsbee and Roy Cantrell.  The burial will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 29 at Arrowwood Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesnee, SC.    The family will receive friends following the service Monday in the church fellowship hall.    Rev. Hollifield was born August 4, 1929 in Chesnee, SC to Carl Shufford Hollifield and Effie Allie Hollifield.  He graduated from Mars Hill College and worked for Duke Power prior to serving in the US Army during the Korean War.  After his discharge, he attended Wake Forest College, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1955.  From 1955 until 1960, he attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.  While in seminary, he began his ministry at Momeyer Baptist Church in Nash County and would serve until 1966.  He then served at First Baptist Church in Church Hill, TN until 1970.  From 1970 until 1995, he served at Jersey Baptist Church in Lexington, where he would retire as Pastor Emeritus.    After his retirement, he served as interim pastor at many churches, including, Reeds Baptist, Greenwood Baptist, Wallburg Baptist and Holloways Baptist and supplied at several area Protestant churches.  He served as the interim Director of Missions for the Liberty Baptist Association and served several terms on the General Board of the NC Baptist State Convention.  His wife of 58 years, Hannah Lou Brown Hollifield, preceded him in death.        He is survived by his wife, Patricia Wells Moore Hollifield; his daughter, Jeanne Hollifield Baucom and husband, Roger, of Chattanooga, TN; his son, Jeffrey Hollifield and wife, Kathy, of Mauldin, SC; his brothers, Donald Hollifield and wife, Blanche and Denton Hollifield and wife, Phyllis, both of Chesnee, SC; his sister, Janice Hollifield of Spartanburg, SC; and his grandchildren, Ashlee Baucom, Jacob Baucom, Stephen Losey and Jerry Losey.      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jersey Baptist Church, 2920 Jersey Church Road, Lexington NC 27292.
