Richard Monroe Lewis

Richard Monroe Lewis, 80, of Hoy Long Road in Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018.   Mr. Lewis was born September 21, 1937 in Forsyth County to James Cline Lewis and Lucy Francis Griffin Lewis.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda McGee Lewis, his parents and an infant brother, James Madison Lewis. Richard attended Mineral Springs High School in Winston-Salem graduating in 1957.  He was a proud Veteran of 6 years in the United States Army, and is most recently known for his car dealership for 17 years with Essick Auto Sales Inc, a member of the Winston-Salem Moose Lodge 466 since 1963, and a member of the Winston-Salem Elks Lodge 449 for 2 years.  He loved NASCAR racing, playing pool, golf and is best remembered for his love of beach music and shag dancing in the Carolinas.  He was a member of the Winston-Salem Shag Club, Boat and Ski Club, and Myrtle Beach Shaggers Association.  He loved and often attended the SOS (Society of Standers) and Myrtle Beach Music Awards in North Myrtle Beach, was a friend and large fan of Pat Patterson's Large Time Network and Fat Harold's Club.  Hundreds of beach music band leaders, musicians and their fans knew Richard by his nickname "The Original Dirty Old Man", Facebook page Lewis TODOM. Surviving is friend and caregiver, Stephanie Chandler; his children, Donny Lewis, Gary Lewis and grandson Josh, Cindy Lewis Maidens, grandson Matt Maidens and great-granddaughters FinLee and TruLynn Maidens, his step-children Greg Parnell and Denise Parnell, step-grandson Sammy Parnell, brother-in-law Stephen McGee and wife Sharon, and three nieces, Rachel McGee Hedges and husband Jacob, Melissa McGee Orr and husband Chris, and their daughter Chelsea, Heather McGee Alcivar and husband Carlos and their children, daughter Aubrey and sons Ty and Evan Spencer. A graveside service will be held at Westlawn Gardens Cemetery in Clemmons, NC, at 2pm Thursday, June 7, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to donor's choice in memory of Richard. Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, is serving the family.
