Richard Lee Sigmon, Senior, 92, a former resident of Lexington, NC for 66 years died Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Brookdale Carriage Club Providence in Charlotte.
The family will see friends from 12:30 - 1:30 pm on Friday, June 28, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lexington. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 28, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lexington. Burial service will follow the memorial service.
Mr. Sigmon was committed to his family, an active church member and a dedicated service man. He was born April 5, 1927 in Catawba County to Darvin Leroy Sigmon and Violet Killian Sigmon. He graduated from Hickory High School. After serving as a Seaman Second Class on the USS Augusta in the US Navy, he was part owner of a service station in Hickory, NC. In 1951, Mr. Sigmon was sworn in to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol where he served for 34 years. During his time with the Highway Patrol, he trained hundreds of troopers in pursuit, was promoted to Sargeant and was honored as North Carolina Trooper of the year.
Mr. Sigmon was a faithful member of First Lutheran Evangelical Church, serving as a Councilmember and Lay Leader. He also very much enjoyed his time in the men’s group, the Brotherhood.
He was a devoted husband, inspiring father, and valued his role as Granddaddy to his three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He had an incredible work ethic that he applied to everything he did, setting an impressive example for all who were blessed to know him. He gave all he had to loving and serving those around him and made everyone he came into contact with feel loved, appreciated and special. Mr. Sigmon had a kind, quiet nature, a strong faith and emanated love and grace.
Mr. Sigmon is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 73 years, Dorothy Kilby Sigmon currently residing in Charlotte; brother Marvin Sigmon and wife Pat of Hickory; son, Richard Lee Sigmon, Jr. of Charlotte and wife Jan; grandchildren, Alison Sigmon Parrella and husband Brian, Lee Brinkley Sigmon and wife Ashley, Ashley Sigmon Brown and husband Gus; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Olivia and Wesley Parrella, Henry, Griffin and Walker Sigmon, and Luke Brown.
The family thanks the staff at Brookdale Carriage Club Providence and Hospice & Palliative Care for their compassionate and loving care.
