Robert Butchart

Robert Leslie Butchart Jr., of Lexington went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 08, 2011. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Lexington. Following the memorial service a private inurnment will follow at the church columnbarium. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church fellowship hall, and other times at the home of his son, John Coble, on Homestead Drive. “Bob” (as he was known by friends and colleagues) was born August 3, 1928, in Greensboro, and grew up in the Alamance community of Guilford County. He graduated from Alamance High School, and from North Carolina State University in Engineering. He was employed by Wysong and Miles Company as an engineer and progressed to the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing, retiring after 43 years with the company. He was a featured speaker for the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association. Known as a man of character and honor, Bob was active in business and community affairs. He served as President of Camp No 26, Woodman of the World, and was honored with the “Mr. Civitan of the Year” award for the club and also for the central North Carolina zone. As a member of the Asheboro Street Baptist Church, and its successor, Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, Bob served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, and leader in Church Training. He also served on numerous committees, including the Planning Committee for the design of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. After moving to Reidsville, he was a member of Baptist Temple Church, where he was a Deacon, taught Sunday school, was Church Training Director, and served on many committees. He was chairman of the Camp Dan Valley Committee and was responsible for the construction of Dan Valley Baptist Conference Center. He also served as Moderator of the Dan Valley Baptist Association. At the time of his death, Bob was a member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, a member and teacher of the Fellowship/Philpott Class and a member of the Senior Adult Singers. Bob was a Master Gardener and member of the Garden Makers Garden Club in Lexington. Other than his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Snyder Butchart. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Doris M. Coble Butchart of the home; daughter Susan B. Zimmerman and husband, David, of Powhatan, Va.; five sons, J. Leslie Butchart and wife, Susan, of Greensboro, David L. Butchart and wife, Pam, of Cummings, Ga., Jack R. Coble Jr. and wife, Terri, of Greensboro, James P Coble and wife, Rebecca, of Rome, Ga., John R. Coble and wife, Teresa, of Lexington; brothers, Edward Butchart of Atlanta, Ga., and Peter Butchart and wife, Judy, of Greenville, S.C.; brother-in-law, Homer Holton of High Point; 12 grandchildren, Jarrett Zimmerman and wife, Elizabeth, Justin Zimmerman and wife, Torry, Benjamin Butchart and wife, Sarah, Lucas Butchart and wife, Anne-Fleur, Rosie Butchart, Austin Butchart, Cameron Butchart, Elliott Coble, Bryce Coble and wife, Jennifer, Caroline Coble, Drew Weaver, and Jillian Coble; and eight great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the caring staff and administration at Alston Brook. We will be forever thankful for the love and support you gave our family.
