Robert Don Hughes age 57, of Lexington went home to be with the Lord on February 3, 2009 after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
He was born to Willie and Elsie Hughes in Thomasville on March 29, 1951.
He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Peggy Prevette Hughes. He has three children, Velvet (Roy) Rumfelt, Donna Palmer and fiancé, Tony Kleineick, and Robert Don Hughes, Jr. He has three stepchildren, Michael (Sandy) Foster, Derek Foster and fiancée, Angie Hix and Steve Foster and fiancée, Samantha Stone. Two brothers, Harold (Betty) Hughes and Sherrill (Leigh Ann) Hughes, two sisters, Kathie (Barry) Hughes and Ersie Hughes. There are 13 grandchildren, Jessie and Brett Palmer, Anastasia, Dakota and Brendon Hughes, Emma and Olivia Faircloth, Luke Foster, Brandon Foster, Summer Stone, Mindy and Emilee Rumfelt and her fiancée, Sollie Young and Samuel McCoy. He has four foster daughters, Nikki Weavil, Anna Wilhelm, Alicia Curtis and Kenya Boger. There have been thirty foster children that have lived in the home during the past nineteen years.
Don went to Fairgrove Elementary School and East Davidson High School. He was a charter member of the Davidson County Foster Parent Association. A lifelong member of Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in Thomasville, he was a very well known farrier in Davidson county and surrounding areas, as far away as Seagrove and Hickory. He was a great chef and his family will miss his cooking.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, February 6, 2009 at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in Thomasville with Pastor Keith Carroll and Rev. Carroll Upton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, February 5, 2009 at DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME.
