Robert Bruce “Shorty” Younts, 83, of Lexington, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Davidson Funeral home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Banks Shepherd. Burial will follow in Beck’s Reformed Church Cemetery.
Mr. Younts was born November 10, 1925, in Davidson County, to Walter Grant and Mary Lohr Younts. He was a 1943 graduate of Davis Townsend High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy on transporter LST 1027, traveling the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Younts was employed in the lumber, furniture, and home construction industries. He was a volunteer fireman in the Central Davidson District for many years. He is best remembered for over 60 years as a talented barber, often servicing grateful nursing home residents. An avid gardener with a special gift for raising tomatoes, he frequently donated and delivered produce throughout the county. In addition to his parents a son, Leonard; a sister, Mildred Craver; and a brother, Toby, all preceded him in death
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Leonard Younts; three sons, Tommy Younts and wife, Marty, Larry Younts and wife, Debbie, and Roger Younts and wife, Wendy; a daughter, Bonnie Baity and husband, Rick; 11 grandchildren, Hannah, Meredith, Jonathan, Amanda, Trent, William, Braxton, Clarke and wife, Penny, Cameron, Craig, and Crystal and husband, Greg; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Abigail; brothers, Lindsay and Lohr and wife, Linda; sister, Laura Surratt and husband, Lloyd; sister-in-law, Willa; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the service and other times at the home on South County Home Road.
